Jewish Soup Kitchen 1854 Whitechapel London

This was established in 1854 and closed its doors in 1902.To qualify for free soup and bread you had to go before a dissaproving committee as many poor of the Parish did at that time. There was almost  disbelief that a Jewish person had got into such financial difficulty that they needed help!

I can remember this building when it was empty and had been for a number of years. If my memory serves me correct, this would have been the mid nineties, before the area became trendy!
