2015-04-14 14.02.17This hotel sign(1970s) has been taken from The London Park Hotel, formerly known as Rowton House at the Elephant and Castle. Rowton House opened in December 1892 and was a workhouse/hostel for Victorian gentlemen who were down on their luck. With room for 805 men,Rowton House must have been considered better than most with a laundry, barbers and shoe makers and tailors rooms.A private cubicle cost 6d a day.For this princely sum you got a bed, a chair, a shelf and a chamber pot. Food had to be paid for or the residents could cook their own. Please click on the link about Rowton House to find out more.http://www.workhouses.org.uk/RowtonNewington/
