The building was owned by a man called Willy Clarkson who was a famous theatrical wig maker(perruquier means wig maker) and costumier.He occupied the premises from 1905, when it was built,until 1940.Sarah Bernhardt,the famous British actress,laid the foundation stone in 1904.A cartouche on the first floor says “established” 1833 and”rebuilt “1904.Until recently it was occupied by a chinese restaurant where the staff were notorious for being very rude to customers,going as far as chasing after you in the street if they thought the tip you left wasn’t large enough!
