Tower Bridge was designed by Horace Jones, who later became Sir Horace Jones. It was started in 1886 and finished in 1894.Its a marvellous specimen of Victorian architecture. The suspensions across the bridge were open to the public for many years but are now closed due to people jumping off of them!
On the evening of December 28th 1952 a bus driver called Albert Gunter was driving the no 78 over it when he sensed that his bus was rising at one end!Realising that his bus had somehow managed to be on the bridge when it was opening,he quickly accelerated and the bus jumped the 3 feet between the bascules (small picture at top) and danger was averted! For this heroic feet, Albert was given the princely sum of 10 pounds!Could you imagine the hoo ha if someone was given that amount now!
Unfortunately there are no photographs of this. What a shame
