This photo was taken down the side of the store as the front has been covered by modern shop signs.
Built in 1877 from the proceeds of a two horse win at Newmarket ,the owner was a man called James Smith who was from Tooting..He bought some ex nursery land at the top of Brixton Hill and decided to build a department store.Staff lived on premises nearby at Topland House on Ferndale Rd and were linked to the store by tunnels, one for men and one for women.
Over the years it has been owned by Selfridges and John Lewis.It is now owned by LRCC, a privately owned business
